| Malware Blaster
The Blaster computer worm was a kind of malware program that originated during the fall of 2003. It only affected computers running the Windows XP and Windows 2000 operating systems, though it could also cause some amount of disruption in the RPC service (Remote Procedure Call) to computers using Windows NT, Windows XP (64 bit), and Windows Server 2003.
The Blaster worm was called by many names. One of the names was Lovsan or Lovesan due to a message embedded in the virus that said, ìI just want to say LOVE YOU SAN!!î Another message was also hidden in the virus, which directly spoke to Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, whose operating system the virus was eventually targeting.
The worm was initially detected on the 11th of August 2003. Within two days, the amount of infections peaked, but was effectively curbed due to preventive measures taken on a large scale by ISPs and major networks. The worm was also programmed to launch an attack on the Windows update website. Since the site was temporarily shutdown by Microsoft, the impact of the attack was substantially minimized.
When the worm infected a computer, one of the first indications of the infection was the repeated shutdown that Windows went through as soon as the system was switched on. The following type of Windows warning message was issued.
ìSystem Shutdown: This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. î
Finally, patches and updates to the affected operating systems were released and the menace was finally put to rest. This is one of the examples of how new viruses can crop up from nowhere all of a sudden and create wide spread destruction within a relatively short span of time. This is one reason why users of the Internet need to keep their computers regularly updated with the latest patches to their operating systems as well as have a comprehensive defense mechanism in place. The age-old advice ìprevention is better that cureî holds good for computers as well. A lot of time, energy, money and peace of mind can be spared by preventing malware programs from intruding into ones system.
