The Internet has become a household utility for communication pretty much like the telephone and the mobile phone that we use to keep in touch with the outside world. The Internet also offers so much more that no other single tool can hope to offer us. It is used not only for communication but also for shopping, education, entertainment, medicine, spiritual edification, news and a whole lot of other purposes which make it one of the most versatile tools that man has ever come to depend on in the recent past. Commercial establishments and businesses of all types have also made effective use of the Internet to maximize their profits and gain market exposure.
The types of companies that have their presence on the Internet are differentiated by the extensions to their domain names. Commercial entities are assigned the extension .com to their domain names. Organizations are assigned the extension .org and network related companies are assigned the extension .net. These suffixes are however not mandatory but are a loose set of guidelines to help Internet users differentiate the nature of the companies based on their domain name extensions. New companies that find their trade names already taken as a domain name by some other companies would have to opt for the same domain with a different extension.
For instance, one of the new anti-malware companies Malware Bytes has its extension as .org even though it is a commercial entity. Most probably the .com domain name might not have been available when the company decided to put up its own website and hence had to settle for a .org extension. But they seem to have finally managed to acquire the .com extension also, probably by purchasing it from the previous owner or when the domain name reached its expiry date. Malware Bytesí anti-malware program is one of the best tools in combating the malware problem effectively.
Some people deliberately block and purchase expired domain names in the hope that they can sell it to anyone wishing to purchase them for a considerable profit, which is a very unethical practice. Laws against unethical blocking of trade names have come into place to deal with this trend.
